Unit 1 Reflection

1. What were the most challenging parts of the assignment? What do you think could be changed/done to make it better/more useful?
2. In preparation for the assignment, we did several things like
  • Discussing basic analytical concepts (SLR, AATP, etc.)
  • Outlining papers and peer-reviewing them
  • Analyzing sample papers
  • Peer reviewing first drafts
  • Conducting individual conferences
Which of them were the most useful and which were the least useful?

  1. 1. The most challenging parts of this assignment were the apa style of writing and the topic of non-academic vs academic. I think that we should have done more practicing before jumping write into it.

2.I thought that the individual conferences were the most useful, as well as analyzing sample papers. I don't feel peer reviews are that necessary, so I believe they are the least useful.

  2. The most challenging part of this assignment was finding appropriate sources to include, as it was very time consuming and was challenging at times. I think that it could be useful to include some in class time looking through sources and having time for questions.
I think the most useful things were discussing the basic analytical concepts as it was useful in outlining the paper, conducting individual conferences, and reading sample papers.
The least useful of these was writing an outline and first draft to have a peer review them. I think this should be optional due to the fact that not everyone feels like an outline is necessary.

  3. I felt that the most challenging part of the assignment was my structure. I knew what I often wanted to say. However, I struggled on fitting my details in the paper and still having the paper flow. I don't think there would be anything to do to change it in particular just because of the topic I chose.
I would say the most useful preparation for the assignment was hands down the individual conferences. I like the conference the most because I was able to sit down with you and ask what I needed to work on. You gave me helpful instruction and made my paper that much better and I know that for certain.

  4. 1. I think one of the challenging parts of this assignment was to figure out the possible usage of academic writing in our fields. As a freshman in college, I have little to none knowledge on my field, and it was challenging to dive into research without a clue. The APA format was definitely challenging because it was the first time I've ever written in this format. However, the sample papers were definitely a good guideline and the information we went over in class helped too. Having peer

    2. I think peer review and conference offered an excellent feed back for my paper. There are different problems to everyone's paper and it is very helpful to get help specifically on your paper. In the end, I think all of the preparation we have done has been crucial in me writing this paper.

  5. 1. The most challenging part was finding three academic sources and non-academic sources. It was also tough to go back and revise the entire paper without disturbing the flow. If I could change something about this assignment I would maybe make the prompt a little more intruiging, this essay was not fun to write.
    2. The most useful preparations for me was the individual conference, I was introduced the primary problems that my paper had. The least useful was discussing analytical concepts, it just confused me and made me think too much about my writing.

  6. 1. The most difficult part of the assignment was probably finding non-academic relevant sources, because many articles about science that are non academic are not written by engineers. I think that the number of interviews done should be increased while other sources should be decreased.

    2. The most helpful things were individual conferences and analyzing sample papers. The sample papers gave me a good idea of the structure and components that were expected, while the interview gave me good usable feedback from a knowledgeable source.
The least helpful things were the outlining papers and peer reviews. Outlining papers didn't really help me because as I wrote I found that some of my better points did not fall within the structure of the outline I had made. Peer reviews aren't great because its subjective to fellow students who may or may not do a good job reviewing it, and they just seemed irrelevant after the conference. Any major changes that were suggested were already brought up in the conference.

  7. I feel that the most challenging part of the assignment was getting it started. I had to come in to study hours for help, without this I don't know if my paper would have turned out the way it did. I think that assigning a strict outline would make this paper easier to follow. Discussing basic analytical concepts was the most important. This is because I used SLR as my three main points for both academic and non-academic writing. I also took AATP into account when explaining these things. Also, analyzing sample papers was very helpful. It gave me a guideline on how I should be writing my paper. I believe that peer reviewing really did not help me much. Most of the corrections given by my peer, would've been caught from me just proof reading. My critiques to my peers papers weren't so insightful either. On the other hand the individual conference was very helpful, because it caught the little things that neither me or my peer reviewers know.

  8. 1. The most challenging part of the assignment for me was getting the structure right. At first, SLR and AATP confused me, but eventually I figured out a way to organize my paper effectively. The assignment itself was good, but if I had to change something, I would probably just say let it be in MLA format.

    2. Discussing basic analytical concepts was extremely helpful to me. Once I figured out what SLR and AATP meant, I was able to use them to structure my paper and have a much better analysis than I would have had. Peer reviews were relatively helpful, mostly for formatting and citation errors. Analyzing sample papers let me know what habits to avoid in my writing, as well as showed me ways to organize my essay effectively. The first draft peer review was probably less helpful, because my individual conference was the time where I found most of my flaws.

  9. 1. I think the most challenging part of the assignment was trying to write about the academic and non academic forms of writing and their qualities without sounding very repetitive. The assignment could be changed to have more subjects to talk about to sound less repetitive while still meeting the page minimum.
    2. I think the individual conference was the most useful because I had a better understanding of what was expected and what I needed to add or change to my paper specifically. I think the least useful was the peer review because it was time consuming to review my peers' papers when I could have been working on my own and I didn't get very much out of the reviews done for my paper. This could be improved by making the peer reviews shorter and less detailed.

  10. 1. The most challenging parts of the assignment was incorporating interview questions within my essay. I had a harder time incorporating my interview into my essay than any other sources. I would ask better interview questions to make it easier for me to incorporate the interview within my essay.
2.conducting individual conferences was the most useful for this assignment, and outlining papers and peer-reviewing them was the least useful.

  11. 1. I think the most challenging part of the assignment was finding academic and non-academic sources that were similar enough to analyze. It was easy to find good academic articles, but it was difficult to find non-academic articles that shared a similar topic to the academic ones. I think, in class, there should be an example shown of an academic article and its counter non-academic article. This way, we will know exactly what kind of academic and non-academic articles to uses.
    2. In preparation for the assignment, I felt as though the individual conferences were the most useful. Meeting with you and hearing all the feedback gave me a clear idea of what I needed to improve on. It made me feel more confident turning in my final draft. I think the least useful was peer-review the outline. I didn't think it was necessary to review them because the outlines are the very first thoughts on the paper and will most likely be changed for the final copy.

  12. 1. The most challenging part of the assignment for me was finding all 6 of the credible sources to use in the paper. It was challenging to try and implement the sources into my paper in a way that was understandable. Personally, I thought that finding sources that fit into my paper well was the hardest part of this assignment.
    2. The basic analytical concepts was the most useful thing that we discussed in class for my paper because my paper was organized by these concepts, so analyzing their meaning was very beneficial. The least useful thing was creating an outline and the peer reviews because that usually does not help me as much as it helps others.

  13. I think the most challenging part for the paper 1 is we need to understand most parts of the resources we chose so that we can analysis those resources. I think analyzing the sample papers and peer reviewing first draft are useful, while discussing basic analytical concepts is the least useful

  14. 1.The most challenging parts of the assignment were figuring out what examples to use from my source, as there was so much content. I also struggled with figuring out how to cite each source. I looked on the website for guidelines but there were so many types of sources, it was hard to know which one it exactly was.

    2. Discussing the analytical concepts was most helpful to me, as it gave me an understanding of what to look for and analyze in my sources. The individual conference was also beneficial because I got to discuss and make note of what to change to suit the person who was grading it specifically. Sample papers helped as well, giving me a guide of what to do/not do. Outlining somewhat helped, but peer reviewing as a whole was not as beneficial for me.
